Before training Sherman Alexies Reservation Blues I had an idea in my mind that living was tough on an Indian modesty compared to my life of white privilege, that consisted of; a warm house, abundance of toys and never knowing that being hungry meant not having food or the means to get food. I had no idea right how difficult growing up and documentation on a reservation could be with my own set of rearards and ideals. Initially I thought that on a reservation there was outpouring water for all and a T.V in every home. I thought they had all the same amenities as in any average American suburb. Well I was unhappily mistaken with the amount of poverty that happens even today on Indian reservations. Reading how the shattered dreams of young Indians, the accepted level of poverty and the very raspy living environments were in air conflict of my initial assumptions.
Alexie writes that Indians on a reservation who dream in childhood of fishing for salmon but woke up as adults to shop at the Trading Post and stand in line for U.S.D.A. commodity food instead. They savagely repeatedly, unresolved up cans of commodities and wept over the rancid meat, forced to eat what assert dogs ignored(14). To think that there are large groups of people living in the same community with in the United States that cannot contact their dreams and are forced to basically eat out of my scraps can.
